We have doubled Indigenous hiring during the pandemic and our aim is to sustain and grow representation across all areas of the bank, including in Technology and Operations, working towards our goal of 1.6%. In line with our commitment to increase Indigenous representation in our Canadian workforce, we launched on-reserve employment hubs where Indigenous employees can remain close to their family and communities while working at BMO.
Miikana is the Ojibwe word for ‘pathway’. More than 1 in 3 Indigenous employees are enrolled in the Miikana Career Pathways program. This program provides one-on-one career coaching and support for Indigenous employees newly hired as well as existing employees through tailored career and development planning, including career/cultural mentorship, sponsorship and ‘buddy’ pairing opportunities. This program has increased retention threefold and new opportunities fivefold, with over half of participants having clear career development plans.
